Verrucous carcinoma is an uncommon cancer that often develops in an area of extreme irritation or inflammation with symptoms of cauliflower-like lesions. It's so rare that the American Cancer Society says it accounts for less than 5% of oral cancers.

Verrucous carcinoma of larynx (VCL) is a rare type of squamous cell carcinoma that comprises 1–4% of all primary laryngeal squamous cell cancers ( 1, 2 ). It is often seen in older adults, and despite the characteristic papillomatous appearance, association with human papillomavirus is not well-established ( 2 ).

Verrucous cancer mainly affects the mouth and throat in the head and neck. It is mainly found in older men, usually around the age of sixty, and is closely related to the use of tobacco and areca. [5,6] Surgery is still the primary treatment, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy as adjuvant therapy. Verrucous carcinoma of the larynx clinically resembles laryngeal papilloma in that both are wart-like masses on the vocal cords and may be characterized by multifocality and recurrence.

Has cytologic and architectural features normally associated with a reactive process but with ability to invade normal tissue. Locally destructive but almost never metastasizes; associated cervical adenopathy may be reactive and not metastatic disease. Usually men in 50s to 60s; associated with tobacco smoking or chewing. Verrucous carcinoma is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma. It was first reported as an exogenous and well-differentiated variant by Ackerman in 1948.
